HALAWA — Although the game venue was displaced due to Tropical Storm Olivia, it was clear skies Friday night at Hawaiian Financial Federal Credit Union Field at Aloha Stadium as the second-ranked Kahuku Red Raiders rushed out to a big 24-0 lead to stifle No. 6 Kamehameha, 24-7, in an Oahu Interscholastic Association-Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I-Open interleague matchup.

Kahuku senior running back added two more rushing touchdowns to his state-leading total of 10 on the season. He carried the rock 20 times for 85 yards with both scores coming in the second quarter on runs of six and four yards,

Toalei Lefau added 64 more yards on 18 carries and rumbled in for a one-yard touchdown with under a minute remaining in the first half.

On the other side, Kamehameha running backs Reino Bush and Alec Serrao ran the ball for 35 and 24 yards, respectively, but sacks and tackles for loss on Braden Akima and quarterbacks Christmas Togiai and Kiai Keone brought the Warriors net output to just 26 yards.

Kahuku's Aaron Fonoimoana-Vaomu (12) totaled eight tackles with one sack, one interception and one forced fumble. He returned his pick 33 yards and was stopped just shy of the goal line. Jim Lebeau | SL    Purchase image

As per usual with the Red Raiders, it was the defense that helped spark points up on the board despite playing without linebacker Miki Ah You (torn ACL) and defensive back Kaonohi Kaniho (knee ailment).

After forcing a three-and-out on the Warrior's first possession of the game, a blocked punt by Aaron Fonoimoana-Vaomu gave the Red Raiders the ball at the Kamehameha 6 yard line. Back-to-back penalties pushed the ball back to the 20 yard line and was later turned into three points via Duke Heffernan's 22-yard field goal.

Later in the quarter, Kahuku forced another three-and-out with a tackle-for-loss and a sack pushing the ball back to Kamehameha's own 9 yard line. Following a punt, the Red Raiders started at the Warriors 35 and six plays later Alo-Maiava sliced his way up the middle for his first touchdown.

With the score at 17-0 after Alo-Maiava's second touchdown late in the second period, Fonoimoana-Vaomu picked off Kamehameha QB Keone and returned it 33 yards to the 1 yard line. Lefau muscled his way in and Heffernan's PAT kick made it 24-0.

Togiai got the start behind center for Kamehameha but was replaced by Keone midway through the second quarter.

Keone got the Warriors on the board on their second drive of the second half after fitting the ball through a tight window over the middle to Akima who raced 31 yards for the score.

Kamehameha would only gain 87 net yards on the next final four possessions of the game.

The Warriors drop to 1-3 in the ILH standings and will host cross-town foe Farrington next Friday.

Kahuku stays at 1-0 in the OIA standings and will only face league opponents the rest of the way, starting with Mililani on Saturday.
