EWA BEACH – Visiting No. 8 Farrington's defense and special teams doomed No. 5 Campbell, 25-7, in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I tournament quarterfinal Friday night.

The Governors (7-2) advance to the next Saturday's semifinals against Kapolei at Aloha Stadium. By winning their respective quarterfinal games, both have clinched berths to the new Open Division state tournament.

Farrington will be out to avenge a 28-7 loss to the Hurricanes on Sept. 24 at Kapolei.

"It's always a challenge," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said of Kapolei. "Those guys are playing well. We get to see them in the stadium, so different venue from when we saw them last, so it should be exciting."

Unlike previous years when a quarterfinal loss meant a team's season was over, the Sabers (5-4), who lost to the Governors in the regular-season opener, 34-14, will play Moanalua in a fifth-place semifinal Friday. The winners of the fifth-place semifinal will play for fifth place the following week. Campbell and Moanalua have secured Division I state berths.

"We're thankful that we have another game," Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said. "I told them don't think we're gonna beat our next opponent because it's Moanalua. We're going to have to play way better."

Running back Challen Faamatau did the damage on the Sabers by rushing for TDs of 6 and 18 yards and returning the second-half kickoff 85 yards for another TD. He rushed for 118 yards on 28 carries, about half from the wildcat formation.

But it was Farrington's defense that pressured Campbell quarterback Kawika Ulufale into throwing two interceptions – by Tanu Tautolo and Freedom Alualu – and sacked him three times, twice by Foi Sila. "(Our assignment) was to keep (Ulufale in the pocket) and wrap," Sila said.

It was imperative for the Govs to contain the slick running Ulufale, who had success packing in the ball in previous games.

"We noticed that when (Ulufale) gets outside, he makes the plays," Okimoto said. "Lot of their touchdowns came on broken plays."

In the outset, the Sabers were moving on the Govs' defense. But the Sabers lost the ball on fourth-and-1 at the Farrington 31 when Ulufale lost a fumble.

Campbell converted two fourth-down situations in its next series before facing fourth-and-goal at the Farrington 4. But Tautolo intercepted Ulufale's pass and returned it to the Farrington 6.

Farrington finally broke the ice in the second quarter. A 73-yard drive culminated on Faamata's 5-yard TD run, some four plays after he had a 36-yard TD run nullified by a block to the back penalty. But the Govs missed the PAT to keep the score 6-0 with 5:10 left in the half.

Campbell would lose another fumble later in the half after Markus Ramos gained 11 yards after a pass from Ulufale. Ramos had returned from a baseball showcase trip in Arizona just the morning of the game.

Farrington contained Campbell's run game, forcing the Sabers into bad situations where they had to throw. Compounding matters was Campbell lost yardage on several plays from low snaps from the shotgun formation.

The close game began pulling away from Campbell when Faamatau returned the second-half kickoff 85 yards for a TD. Luke Ocreto-Penitusi sacked the QB on the ensuing 2-point conversion try.

Campbell went three-and-out on its next series was forced to punt. Tautolo had an apparent 70-yard punt return for a TD nullified by a penalty, but Farrington took over at Campbell's 19. Five plays later, RB Blessing Umaga scored from 5 yards to make it 18-0 after another failed 2-point try.

"I see the lack of focus by our kids," Amosa said. "Yesterday was our special team day. We talked to them about how important this kind of day is; it's not a cruise day or a day you play around. We go through everything: pooch kick, onside kick. For our guys not to go on that pooch kick…To me, that's our fault. We're not teaching our kids that the ball is live."

After Farrington opened its lead to 25-7 with 1:56 in the game on Faamatau's 18-yard TD run, Campbell was penalized 15 yards on the PAT. The penalty was enforced on the kickoff, where Farrington kicked off from Campbell's 45. Farrington recovered a pooch kick to basically seal the game.

Campbell's only score came from its defense when Pokii Adkins-Kupukaa returned and interception 65 yards for a TD.

Although leading comfortably at 18-0, Okimoto wanted to work on the passing game. But after the interception, ran the ball out of the wildcat formation for most of the remainder of the game against Campbell's winded defense.

"We want to get ourselves in a position where we can get those third-and-longs, second-and-long and be able to throw it," Okimoto said. "We know into the playoffs, we have to be balanced. We haven't had a same offensive line start two weeks in a row, so it's important we can do both (pass and run) on offense."

NOTE: The winners of Friday's fifth-place semifinals will continue to play, but the losers will not. A tiebreaker will determine which team is the seventh and eighth seeds for the OIA D1.
