HALAWA — Led by Tua Tagovailoa, Dylan Silva, and a stout defensive effort, No. 2 Saint Louis scored 35-unanswered points to upend No. 6 Kamehameha, 35-3 on their Homecoming night in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu matchup at Aloha Stadium on Saturday.

Saint Louis improves to 4-0 overall, 3-0 ILH, while Kamehameha drops to 2-3 overall, 1-2 ILH.

The Crusaders gained 129 net rushing yards on the ground and three scores. Tagovailoa threw for 273 on 23-of-36 passing. Silva rushed for 43 yards on seven carries.

"We want to finish the first round strong. Second round, we have to come out harder and we play Iolani and we cannot take anyone lightly. Credit the linemen, they built the wall and created the openings, I just hit it hard and went," said Silva.

"They have a good front and they were bringing the pressure and we couldn't adjust. We had to adjust and we had to try to run the ball to get the running game going," added Tagovailoa.

Kamehameha opened game using a 12 play 81-yard drive that took up 6 minutes and 41 seconds that resulted in a 39-yard field goal by Adam Stack. This would be the only points the Warriors would score. It was a way to control the tempo early and limit the Crusaders' offensive opportunities.

"Tua is a special talent and we wanted to try and limit the opportunities he had early in the game and manage the game from there. There are a lot of mistakes we have to fix," said Kamehameha coach Abu Maafala.

Saint Louis answered back with an 11 play scoring drive that covered 80 yards after Tagovailoa found Christopher Sykes for a 15 yard TD.

A short punt gave the Crusaders great field position at the Warriors' 39 and later scored on a 2-yard run by Silva to make it, 14-3. Tagovailoa added another passing TD to Tosh Kekahuna-Kalawe with 1:24 remaining in the first half to give Saint Louis a 21-3 lead.

Kamehameha had trouble moving the ball all night. Aside from the field goal, of their 10 offensive drives, two resulted in punts, they turned it over on downs three times and two were interceptions. Jaykob Cabunoc led all receivers with six catches for 115 yards.

The Warriors defense did their part in disrupting Tagovailoa's timing and rhythm and he was hurried out of the pocket. Although he gained 42 rushing yards on the night, he was called for intentional grounding and was sacked for a 6-yard loss by Jonah Welch.

"Our guys are starting to buy in and we're getting better each week. You sit back in coverage, he's going to tear you apart. We went into this thing called ‘feast and famine' to make it uncomfortable for him and I think we accomplished that," said Maafala.

"I give Kamehameha a lot of credit, they put a lot of pressure on our quarterback tonight. That's a fact. He (Tua) was running because he's being pressured, I don't think we blocked real well honestly," said Saint Louis coach Cal Lee.

Isaac Slade-Matautia had an interception and a sack, but flagged for a personal foul and was ejected in the fourth quarter for unsportsmanlike conduct. Junior Wily had the other Crusader interception, Faatui Tuitele had a sack and pass breakup and Isaiah Taliulu had a sack.

"Isaac lost his composure. He's got to learn from this," said Lee.

After Kamehameha turned it over on downs, Tagovailoa connected with Silva and Kekahuna-Kalawe to move the ball down field and he rushed for a 22-yard gain— in the process lost his shoe. Austin Tuisano finished the drive with a 3-yard TD.

The Warriors turned it over on downs after Kanoa Shannon lost 13 yards on a pass from Yam. Saint Louis capitalized on a 8-yard TD by Silva, his second of the night.

The Crusaders begin the second round of the ILH season at Iolani (3-3 overall, 0-3 ILH), while the Warriors play Punahou (3-1 overall, 2-1 ILH) at Aloha Stadium. Both games are on Friday, Sept. 23.
