MILILANI – While weather warnings led to Saturday's postponement of games, there was no alert of a Hurricane that spun through here Monday night.

The No. 8 Kapolei Hurricanes blew through No. 5 Mililani without warning in a 40-12 win to force a three-way tie in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Red.

"It feels good winning," Kapolei sophomore quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa said. "I know it's hard playing at Mililani, especially at their homecoming. We did what coach told us. We started fast and finished strong."

The Hawaiian Electric Game of the Week was a shocker of sorts. The Hurricanes (4-1 overall, 3-1 OIA) handed the Mililani (3-1, 3-1) its first regular-season loss since Sept. 9, 2012, when Leilehua beat the Trojans, 17-13. The loss to Kapolei snapped Mililani's 27-game regular-season win streak and disappointed a homecoming and senior night crowd of about 3,000 at John Kauinana Stadium. (Farrington's 19-7 win against Leilehua made the Govs 3-1.)

Monday's game was one of three OIA games affected by Saturday's postponements because of the threat of Tropical Storm Lester.

Kapolei sophomore quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa was the center of the storm, passing for 365 yards and four touchdowns, three to Wyatt Perez. The Hurricanes' defense also wreaked havoc on the Trojans' offense, which turned over the ball four times and punted on its first four series of the game. An interception by Kalani Segovia was returned 53 yards for a TD. An interception by Adam Berg led to, at first, a 37-yard field goal by Beau Meyer. But a roughing the kicker penalty allowed Kapolei to take the points off the board and cash it in for Tagovailoa's 8-yard TD pass to Jaymin Sarono, who finished with 12 catches for 128 yards.

Tagovailoa completed 31 of 55 passes and Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez felt he could have inflicted more damage.

"We still feel we didn't play our best," Hernandez said. "We had 10 dropped passes in the first half, including two for touchdowns, so I still think we can play better. We still had weapons that weren't there, like Antoneo Brown and we had a bunch of guys out."

Although Tagovailoa was sacked three times, he pretty much was protected well. Perhaps too well to Mililani coach Rod York.

"Penalties killed the game," York said. "No holding penalties (against Kapolei) for us. Basically, (the Hurricanes) got all the holding calls; they must have a hell of an offensive line."

Kapolei had 17 penalties for 117 yards, including one offensive holding call. Mililani had 12 penalties for 111 yards, the defense drawing 10 calls.

Kapolei scored on two of its first three series of the game with Tagovailoa throwing TD passes of 19 and 35 yards to Perez, the latter coming on fourth-and-2, to take a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Trojans made it a game early when they scored on a five-play, 94-yard drive on RB Kailiohu Kila's 5-yard run. It was Kila's 62-yard jaunt on a draw play from the Trojans' 15 that made up most of the drive. Jalen Olomua tried to run in the 2-point conversion, but was stopped by Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa to keep the score, 14-6, with 7:43 in the second period.

Meyer's 28-yard field goal increased the Hurricanes' lead to 17-6. Though Kapolei recovered an ensuing onside kick, the Hurricanes eventually turned over the ball on a fumble, only to see the Trojans to the same two plays later.

Although Kapolei did not cash in on the turnover and punted, it made up for it when Segovia picked off a Dillon Gabriels sideline pass and returned the ball 53 yards for a TD to make it 24-6 with 33 seconds in the half.

Kapolei received the second-half kickoff, but eventually had to punt. Riley Asuncion's 71-yard punt pinned the Trojans at their 4. On first down, a low snap from center rolled out of the end zone for a safety to increase Kapolei's lead to 26-6. Worse for Mililani, Kapolei later scored on the ensuing free kick on Tagovailoa's 10-yard TD pass to Perez. The PAT was blocked to keep the score 32-6.

The Trojans were hurt by one of their penalties early in the fourth period. Meyer made a 37-yard field goal, but a roughing the kicker penalty led to an automatic first down at the Trojans' 10. Three plays later, Tagovailoa hit Sarono for an 8-yard TD. Tagovailoa then connected with Leighton Rosa for the 2-point conversion to make it 40-6 with 9:08 in the game.

Mililani scored on its ensuing series when Darius Muasau scored on a 1-yard run with 6:49 left. A 2-point conversion try failed, as did the next two Trojans' series.

The win puts Kapolei in a favorable position as far as head-to-head tiebreakers because its only loss came in the crossover game against Waianae. Kapolei plays Farrington in three weeks.

The Trojans don't have much time to dwell on the loss; they play at Nanakuli on Friday. In fact, the rest of their games are on the road.

"It's tough to win a game in this conference," York said. "We'll grow. Definitely lot of teachable moments and we'll get better. Trust me, we'll get better."
