MILILANI — Dillon Gabriel threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns to lead Mililani to a 42-0 rout against an overmatched Castle team on a rainy Saturday night at John Kauinana Stadium.

The sixth-ranked Trojans dominated both sides of the ball, rushing for 345 of their 562 yards of total offense, while holding the Knights to 94 yards. The score was 35-0 by halftime and the entire second half was played with a running clock due to the mercy rule.

Mililani coach Rod York tempered his team's enthusiasm quickly after the game.

"I think Castle only had a few guys to start with, but give them credit, they didn't give up and they played hard," York said.

The Knights, whose deepest penetration was the Mililani 29-yard line, managed just six first downs for the game and were 1 of 9 on third downs.

"We thought that for us to have a chance, everything would have had to fallen into place — we would've had to brought our A-game and they would have probably have to play one of their not-so-stellar games — but when they play well like they did tonight, they're just overwhelming on offense, defense and special teams," said Knights coach Nelson Maeda, who suited up 40 players for the game.

Gabriel, a sophomore quarterback, completed 14 of 20 passes to six different pass-catchers and was not intercepted. His 87-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Chang three plays into the game opened the scoring.

After back-to-back holding and personal foul penalties on second down, the Trojans were backed up at their own 13 facing third-and-35. Chang, who was aligned wide left of the formation, lost his defender on a well-executed hitch-and-go pattern and shed a tackle after the pass from Gabriel on the long scoring play.

"That's what we've got to do; we've got to make plays," Gabriel said. "Ryan's staring to break out of his shell and he's starting to do some things that we like, but we've got to control the flags. That was definitely a problem. We've got to go back to that and fix that."

The Trojans were flagged 10 times for 106 yards in the first half and ended up with a total of 13 penalties for 121 yards for the game.

Chang finished with three receptions for a game-high 109 yards.

Mililani punted away on its second series after another third-and-long, but needed just one play — an 85-yard TD run by Jalen Olomua three plays into second quarter — on its third drive to find the end zone. Olomua, who is 6-feet tall and weighs 210 pounds, ran for a game-high 126 yards on just six carries in his first game back from injury.

The Trojans had another back, fellow junior Kailiohu Kila, go over the century mark. He carried seven times for 122 yards.

"It definitely helped to have that running game tonight, to have Jalen back and (Kila) is starting to grow into his own, too," said Gabriel, who praised the offensive line for their work, as well.

"They did really good," Gabriel said. "They gave me a lot of time, so I can't complain and they did a lot to get our run-game going."

Castle turned it over on the very next play from scrimmage when running back Henry Nakamura-Lee was stripped by Mililani's Joshua Banks and Mykah Tuiolemotu recovered. Four plays later, the Trojans recycled it into a 7-yard TD run by Andrew Valladares on a jet-sweep.

Midway through the second quarter, Gabriel hit Roman Tovi for an 11-yard scoring strike on a pass to the back, right corner of the end zone. Damien Santiago's extra point made it 28-0.

A few minutes later, the Trojans stretched their lead to 35-0 following a two-play drive that was capped by Kila's 49-yard touchdown run. Kila later closed out the scoring with his 4-yard TD run in the third quarter.

"I think our defense was on the field too long," Maeda said. "Our offense was pretty much three downs and out, we had breakdowns. They showed glimpses of success, so the potential for our defense is there to be consistent, but we just have to be consistent every series."

Mililani's defense recorded five sacks on Castle quarterbacks and two takeaways, including a late interception by linebacker Jacob McLaughlin in the game's closing minutes.

Standout wide receiver Jeremy McGoldrick was held to three receptions for 35 yards for the Knights.

"Not bad," York said of his defense, "But Castle has one weapon (McGoldrick), so we'll see when we play teams that have two, three, four weapons."

Junior quarterback Makana Smith, who had four total touchdowns in Castle's win 42-7 win over Radford a week ago, did not start due to disciplinary reasons. He entered the game with 9:44 left in the first half and finished 6-of-11 passing for 39 yards with an interception. Uyemura-Lee completed 3 of 6 passes for 19 yards.

The Knights, who had outscored their first two opponents, 85-6, fell to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Red. They will host No. 8 Kapolei (2-1) Friday.

Mililani will face fifth-ranked Farrington Saturday at John Kauinana Stadium in a matchup of 2-0 teams in the OIA D1 Red.
