HALAWA — It was only fitting that a muscle cramp forced Challen Faamatau, Farrington's prolific running back, to lay flat on his back on the turf at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium at the end of his team's 21-14 win over Campbell Saturday night.

Faamatau rushed for 114 yards on 24 carries and scored all team's touchdowns to help the ninth-ranked Governors (6-2 overall, 5-2 league) snap a two-game losing streak.

"We made him the workhorse," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said of the junior running back. "TJ (Tautolo) was out tonight, so (Faamatau) was pretty much the only guy. We had some other guys, but we just wanted him to get the carries, because he might have to do it for us the whole way in the playoffs."

With the win, the Govs clinched the Blue Division's second seed and a first-round bye in the Oahu Interscholastic Association tournament, which gets underway next weekend. They will face the winner of the opening-round matchup between Campbell and Kaiser on Saturday.

"It was a big win," Faamatau said. "Getting that bye helps us prepare for the team that we're going to be facing. We can actually go to the game now, watch the team that we're going to be facing and it gives us more time to prepare. We don't just have the bye week, we also have the following week to prepare, so it's a great feeling to have this bye."

Faamatau's first touchdown — a two-yard plunge — was set-up by a Campbell miscue on special teams.

A high snap over the head of Sabers' punter Keani Pacheco gave Farrington the ball at the 4-yard line. A penalty against Campbell moved the ball to the 2 before Faamatau followed behind the block of fullback Freedom Alualu into the end zone. Jathen Chaffin ran in the two-point conversion to give the Govs an 8-0 lead with 3:49 until halftime.

Two plays into the third quarter, Kawika Ulufale connected with Markus Ramos on a 41-yard touchdown pass to get the Sabers on the board. The PAT was blocked.

Farrington's ensuing drive ended with a punt, but Campbell turned it over one play later when Terrell Johnson couldn't find the handle on a pitch from Ulufale and Ansen Faamasino recovered for the Govs. Just two plays after the turnover, Faamatau scored on a 3-yard run, followed by the PAT by Walker Finau to extend the lead to 15-6.

Early in the fourth quarter, Faamatau added a 5-yard TD run to cap a nine-play, 67-yard drive. The Govs picked up a key first down on a 3-yard Faamatau run on fourth-and-1.

Campbell got a late score on a 14-yard TD pass from Ulufale to Noah Esprecion. The same two hooked up on the two-point conversion.

Farrington finished with 217 yards of total offense, far below its season average of 381.3 yards per game. Its first four drives of the game ended with two punts, a fumble and a turnover on downs before Faamatau's first TD run.

"We hope to always start fast, but sometimes we won't get what we want," Faamatau said. "Our (offensive coordinator Daniel Sanchez) and our offensive linemen, they really talked to us, got to us and they really told us that everything is there. Coach told us before the game that he can call the worst play and we still can score, it all depends on how we execute. Everybody's just got to do their assignments and then everything is going to fall in place and we're going to score like how we did tonight."

The fumble, which was the lone turnover for the Govs, gave the Sabers the ball at the Farrington 12-yard line, but their defense held, forcing a turnover on downs.

"We got the ball in the red zone in the beginning of the game and we couldn't muster anything, but you know, what we do is nothing new," Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said. "The things that we do work in practice are what we're trying to do in games, but of course, for us to be successful we have to be able to run the ball."

The Sabers (1-7 overall, 1-6 league) were held to minus-40 rushing yards and finished with 158 yards of total offense. They have now lost two straight games and will be the sixth seed out of the Blue and visit Red third-seed Kaiser (4-3).

Other first-round games Friday will see Moanalua (2-5) visiting Leilehua (3-4), Kailua (5-2) hosting Waipahu (1-6) and Castle (3-4) visiting Kapolei (4-3).
