SALT LAKE – No. 6 Farrington outscored Moanalua, 30-7 in the second quarter to pull away from the Na Menehune, 47-27 at Moanalua High School on Friday night. The Govs remain unbeaten at 3-0 while the Na Menehune drop their second game and fell to 1-2 in the O’ahu Interscholastic Association Blue Division.

“They usually give us a good game here and they did. Those kids fight hard from Moanalua, even though they are undersized and they play through the whole game and that’s what I like about them,” said Farrington coach Randall Okimoto.

“Our guys fought and they have heart and they are resilient and they will never quit fighting,” said Moanalua coach Jason Cauley, on his team’s effort.

The Govs rushed for 267 yards for the game. Ranan Mamiya finished with 13 carries for 95 yards and three touchdowns and Challen Faamatau rushed for 17 carries for 126 yards and a touchdown. Faamatau also had a receiving touchdown for 24 yards.

“That’s what we do and what we’re known for. We wanted to commit to throwing the ball more because the last two outings we weren’t as successful as we wanted to,” said Okimoto.

After establishing the run game, Farrington tried to open it up with the passing game.

"He made some nice throws, but we dropped a few balls. Of course he had time to throw the ball," said Okimoto, on Montana Liana who finished 10 of 20 for 120 yards and threw one interception and one touchdown.

“Offensively, our linemen and receivers did their job and it was a good team effort,” said Mamiya.

The Govs overcame a massive offensive performance by Moanalua. The Na Menehune had 575 yards of net offense, and Kawika Keama-Jacobe went 26-of-47 passing for 552 yards. Karson Cruz caught a game-high 10 catches for 311 yards and two touchdowns and Michael Feliciano caught eight passes for 132 yards and a 30-yard touchdown. Both receivers stepped up in the absence of receiver Jason Sharsh. Sharsh was held out tonight due to a back injury according to coach Cauley.

“Karson had a great game, it was colossal. We knew we had it in him and he’s a volleyball and basketball guy and we knew he had hands and ups. I’m glad to see him step up in the limelight tonight,” said Cauley, praising the 6-foot-1 receiver.

The Na Menehune had five opportunities to score in the red zone, but turnovers prevented them from coming away with points.

“We had plenty of opportunities. It was our game to win if we executed all those times, we should have. I feel like every game we go into, we have a chance,” said Cauley.

Walter Peters answered with a 1-yard touchdown, but the kick was no good and Moanalua trailed, 7-6 in the first quarter. The Na Menehune took a 12-7 lead after Keama-Jacobe threw a 52 yard touchdown pass to Karson Cruz, but the 2-point conversion pass failed.

“We just believe in each other and stay as one team and one family,” said Mamiya.

Mamiya scored on a 25 yard run and seven seconds later Seufagafaga Luafatasaga recovered a fumble and returned it 10-yards to put the Govs up, 22-12.

“The defense did good, we all played together. We had a little misunderstanding on the sideline but we came back and made up for it,” said Luafatasaga.

“That’s the positive,” said Okimoto, on the defense. “You got to give credit to their offense (Moanalua), it’s a high-powered offense and kept us on our heels. I was happy about the defensive effort in the red zone and goal line, getting us out of those situations with turnovers. It was good work for us because we have teams that throw the ball in this conference and we have to get ready for them."

Keama-Jacobe threw a 40 yard touchdown pass to Cruz to bring the Na Menehune within 3, 22-19. Cruz had six catches for 226 yards, two touchdowns and Keama-Jacobe was 14 of 20 for 344 yards at halftime.

However, the Govs extended the lead, 37-19 at halftime after Montana Liana passed it to Faamatau for 24 yards and Mamiya rushed for a 16-yard touchdown, his third of the game.

“That’s the key, we want to get better and better. I think we got better from last week, it was a close game, we’ll celebrate it but forget about it and prepare for Aiea next week,” said Okimoto.

Farrington will play Aiea at Roosevelt’s Ticky Vasconcellos on Sept. 6 while Moanalua hosts Kapolei on Aug. 5 that will be televised on OC16.
