Campbell's Johnson, Kamehameha's Lau lead weekly honors

Male Athlete of the Week: Terell Johnson, Campbell football
Any football fan knew that Isaac Hurd would be tough to replace at the quarterback position for the Campbell football team this fall.

Friday's 34-6 win over then-No. 10 Moanalua served as the much-anticipated varsity debut of sophomore Ezra Savea, the young man looking to fill Hurd's shoes. However, another first-year player, running back Terell Johnson, was the star, rushing for 129 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

"I'm very happy with what he's doing for us right now," Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said of Johnson. "We hoped he would excel in varsity, because he did a lot of damage on JV last year. I mean, he was a man amongst boys at the JV level. It's really a testament to the character of TJ. He's such a great kid."

Johnson, a 6-foot, 200-pound junior, averaged over 7.1 yards on each of his 18 carries. He scored on a 7-yard run on his fifth attempt of the game late in the first quarter and added another touchdown on his final carry in when he broke loose for a 50-yard run in the fourth quarter.

"All the credit goes to the offensive line, they did a hell of a job," Johnson said.

Johnson was only brought down for a loss of yardage twice and had four runs of at least 11 yards. Eleven of his rushes and 109 yards came after halftime.

"Part of me talking with my team at halftime is we needed to be more consistent upfront with our run game and I didn't want to put too much pressure on Ezra in his first game so the goal was to really control the clock and control the game and let our o-line kind of wear down their guys," Amosa said.

Aside from Johnson, seven other players carried the ball against Moanalua Friday, including senior Austin May, who added 73 yards and a touchdown on 12 rushes. May and Johnson should provide Campbell with a formidable 1-2 punch in the running game this season. Against Na Menehune, the Sabers racked up 299 rushing yards on 49 attempts.

"As an o-line, I would be so happy to have Austin and TJ as running backs, because those guys don't need big holes. Just a small crack here and there and they can get through it, make some people miss and use their speed to get to the end zone." Amosa said. "I think that it's a great asset for us that we can have two guys really that can get our running game going. That's a big plus."

It was the second consecutive week over 100 rushing yards for Johnson, who kicked off the season with 151 rushing yards, including a 70-yard touchdown run, against Castle in week 2.

Johnson and the Sabers (2-0), who are ranked seventh in the ScoringLive/OC16 Division I Football Power Rankings, have a bye this weekend before hosting Kailua on Sept. 5.

Female Athlete of the Week: Sarah Lau, Kamehameha volleyball
Sarah Lau's versatility can be measured in multiple ways.

The Kamehameha senior is a member of the volleyball and soccer teams — both are reigning state champions — and on the hardwood the 6-foot Lau is part-time setter, part-time opposite.

"She blocks great, she hits great, she sets when she's needed to," Warriors' coach Chris Blake said of Lau, a third-year varsity player. "She's doing a lot of great thing for us."

Blake said Lau, who recently verbally committed to play soccer at the University of Hawaii, has a blend of athleticism and competitive fire that makes her special.

"She's such a competitor and she works so hard at everything that she does," Blake said. "She wants to be the best at everything that she does and that's what pushes her. When she had her opportunity last year she stepped in and did well. It was seamless."

Lau's transition to her senior year appears to be going swimmingly as she powered Kamehameha to a perfect 9-0 weekend at the Hawaii Volleyball Invitiational at the Warriors' Kekuhaupio Gym. Kamehameha swept Iolani 25-20, 25-20 in the tournament final Saturday afternoon. Lau led the way with 10 kills.

"I think we did pretty good as a team," Lau said. "All the returnees worked hard all this week trying to get the rookies to where they need to be and getting them prepared so we can get that state title back."

The Warriors beat Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I contender Moanalua 25-21, 25-12 in the semifinals. They did not drop a single game in the tournament. Many like Kamehameha as an early favorite to repeat as state champions in 2014.

"We can look back at what we did last year and know that we can still improve ourselves because most of our starting lineup right now is seniors," Lau said. "This tournament was just like a baseline of where we are at and we just wanted to use this as an opportunity to improve ourselves and see where we stand when we play in front of all these people and against all these teams. I thought we made a good showing."

Other top players returning include hitters Tiyana Hallums and Kayla Afoa and libero Mia Heirakuji. Kamehameha will have to overcome the losses of class of 2014 graduates Faith Maafala, a First Team All-ILH selection last year, and league Player of the Year, Alohi Robins-Hardy.

"I learned a lot from Faith and Alohi, because they're both setters and that's my position," Lau said. "They were both great leaders and prepared us for what to do to become leaders. Alohi and Faith really set good examples for us."

Lau and the Warriors open the Interscholastic League of Honolulu season at Iolani on Sept. 8.
