MILILANI — The return of legendary coach Cal Lee to the Saint Louis sideline proved to be a historical one, just not in the way that the Crusader faitfhful had hoped.

McKenzie Milton accounted for 571 yards of total offense and seven touchdowns to lead Mililani to a 63-47 win over Saint Louis in a non-league game Saturday night. It was the most points scored by the Trojans in school history and the most ever allowed by the Crusaders in a single game.

A capacity crowd of about 5,000 fans at John Kauinana Stadium witnessed the host Trojans amass a staggering 729 yards of total offense and eight touchdowns. Milton, a junior quarterback, threw for 367 yards on 21-of-31 passing and four touchdowns and rushed for another 204 yards and three other scores.

"We wanted this game, we've been waiting nine months for it since we lost the state championship," said Milton, who did not throw an interception. "This is what we've been working for and I'm really excited to get this one under our belt."

The Trojans built a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter after Milton opened the scoring with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Kainoa Wilson and Vavae Malepeai punched in a pair of 2-yard touchdown runs. Wilson finished with eight receptions for 153 yards and also hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Milton late in the third quarter. After fumbling midway through the first quarter, Malepeai ended up with 107 rushing yards on 25 carries.

"It's a good feeling beating Saint Louis — they're a good team, it was a good game," said Malepeai, who attended Saint Louis before transferring to Mililani for his sophomore year in 2013. "I feel like it's just a glimpse of what we're capable of. We have the potential to do big things, but we just have to put in the work. I think we did pretty good at keeping each other up when one of us made a mistake — just like me fumbling the ball — but overall, we still have a lot to work on."

The teams exchanged several scores in the second quarter, including three Saint Louis touchdowns coming on Tua Tagovailoa scoring strikes. Tagovailoa, a sophomore who was seeing his first varsity action, played the second and fourth quarters, while senior Ryder Kuhns played the first and third quarters. Tagovailoa completed 18 of 28 passes for 198 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions. Kuhns was 12-of-22 passing for 157 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Mililani held a 35-20 lead at halftime, but Saint Louis got to within 35-33 after scoring twice within 16 seconds early in the third quarter. Kuhns connected with Allan Cui III on a 17-yard scoring strike and Jonathon Manalo scampered for a 15-yard touchdown run. The Crusaders had a chance to tie it with a two-point conversion following Manalo's run, but Raymond Caayon was denied on by the Trojan defense on the run. Cui III had team-highs of 10 receptions for 112 yards and Keanu Souza added seven grabs for 107 yards and two touchdowns.

However, Mililani scored on its next three possessions to quickly stretch its lead back to 56-33 early in the fourth quarter. Milton scored his second of three rushing touchdowns of the game on a 1-yard sneak and minutes later found Wilson for their 14-yard touchdown hookup. Five plays into the fourth quarter — following an interception of Kuhns by Ramsey Tacadena — Milton hit Kalakaua Timoteo for a 17-yard scoring strike. The speedy Milton also scored on a 47-yard scramble in the fourth quarter.

"We've been putting in a lot of work, so it's nice to see that it's actually paying off and that coach has faith in our offense to where we can just come out and smash these guys," said Timoteo, who finished with 10 receptions for 190 yards.

Ty Purcell-Apana led Mililani defensively with eight tackles and an interception. The Trojans (2-0), who are ranked second in the ScoringLive/OC16 Division I Football Power Rankings, racked up 35 first downs but also committed 12 penalties for 143 yards.

"We've got a lot of things to correct," Mililani coach Rod York said. "Don't get me wrong, we're happy with the win, but at the same time, to give up 47 points is a little disappointing, but the good thing about it is we went against a great team that is rich in tradition, we got a preseason game in — even though it felt like a championship game — but we came out with a W and we're happy with it."

The third-ranked Crusaders (0-1) managed 469 offensive yards, but turned it over three times. Jedadiah Lulu recorded a game-high nine tackles and Makoa Chappa added seven stops and three fumble recoveries. The 110 combined points is the fourth highest single-game total all-time.

"We've got a lot of work to do," said Lee, who led Saint Louis to 14 consecutive Oahu Prep Bowl or state championships during his last stint there and is the winningest prep coach in state history. "That's what you have preseason games for; to find out your strengths, your weaknesses and go back to the drawing board and try to get better."

The Crusaders played without numerous players on academic probation, including several starters on the defense. It won't get any easier for Saint Louis, which plays reigning MaxPreps national champion St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) and defending state champion Punahou the next two weekends.

Mililani also had a number of players ineligible, but its starting lineup was largely unaffected.

The game was originally scheduled for Aug. 9, but was postponed due to the threat of Hurricane Iselle last week.
