Over 40 sign letters of intent at PIAA spring ceremony

WAIKIKI — For Campbell senior Toese Tia, signing his National Letter of Intent Wednesday morning was a family affair.

Tia, a standout defensive lineman on the Sabers' football team, was joined by his family at the Signing Day event that was put on by the Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance at the Waikiki Elks Club. He was one of more than 40 high school seniors who signed with their future schools in the largest spring signing ceremony that PIAA has staged in more than 10 years.

After signing with the United States Military Academy (Army), Tia was all smiles as he posed for pictures with friends and family.

"Everything just got finalized last night so it's been pretty busy, but I'm really happy about signing today and knowing that it's taken care of," said Tia, who was recruited by Army assistant and former Waipahu head coach Sean Saturnio. "He made me feel like they wanted me there and I'm just excited about the opportunity to play football there and serve my country."

Tia said he comes from a long line of Army servicemen. His father, a Command Sargeant Major in the Army, was in uniform at his son's signing Wednesday.

"My dad has been in the Army for over 20 years, so I've grown up being around it and a lot of my family has served in the Army," Tia said. "It was a special moment between him and I this morning because when I finish at West Point, I'll be the first officer in my family."

Another former Campbell football player, quarterback Isaac Hurd, was among the signing group Wednesday. Hurd, along with Mililani receiver Bronsen Ader, penned their commitments to Southern Oregon.

"I was looking for something to open up and this opened up for me," said Hurd, who was a second team All-Hawaii football selection last season. "I liked the coach and I saw a documentary about the football team and it interested me."

Ader, who played with Hurd at Campbell before transferring to Mililani before his senior season, is the second Trojan to sign with Southern Oregon this year. Defensive end KK Padello, ScoringLive's All-Hawaii Division I Defensive Player of the Year, also committed to the school at the February signing day.

"It'll be nice to have some familiar faces around, definitely," said Ader, who was attracted to Southern Oregon's wide-open passing offense. "We might have to bring some Spam up there."

Like Ader, volleyball and basketball standout Sarah Liva also transferred to Mililani for her senior season. Liva previously attended Hanalani, but left to seek a higher level of competition and exposure. Her plan paid off Wednesday when she signed with Portland State.

"It was a long process and it was stressful at times, but I'm happy that it's over with and I know what my future holds for the next four years," said Liva, who was a first team All-Hawaii girls basketball selection this season. "When I went to go visit the campus, I just fell in love with the area."

Liva will be on a volleyball scholarship and will focus on that sport in her first year. She expects to join the basketball team as well the following year.

Another student-athlete at Wednesday's event will be joining Liva in the Beaver State. Former Punahou offensive lineman Davis Miyashiro-Saipaia turned down several opportunities to play at smaller schools to attend the University of Oregon as a preferred walk-on.

"I always wanted to play at a big school and I'm really grateful for this opportunity," said Miyashiro-Saipaia, a first team All-Hawaii pick. "I had a great experience at Punahou and I'm excited for what Oregon has to offer."

Perhaps no student-athlete was more relieved Wednesday morning than Kamehameha point guard Tiare Kanoa. After helping the Warriors win the Division I girls basketball state title in 2013, Kanoa's senior campaign was cut short by a torn ACL suffered in the preseason.

"That was hard to deal with, but I knew I could do it because I tore an ACL as a freshman, too," said Kanoa, who had verbally committed to Arizona State before the knee injury. "I called them the night that it happened and I told them that my season was done and that I tore it, but they were supportive the whole time and helped me through it. They said that when I committed to them, they committed to me and they were going to stand by that."
