Balanced attack helps Corona Del Mar overpower KS-Hawaii

Corona Del Mar swept past Kamehameha-Hawaii, 25-17, 25-23, 25-23, in the first game of the final night of the 2014 edition of the Clash of the Titans held at Punahou's Hemmeter Fieldhouse.

The Sea Kings won both matches played in the two-day invitational, a first for the Southern California school making its third appearance in the Clash.

"It was nice. We played two very, very good teams. Teams that were a litle bit different," said Corona Del Mar head coach Steve Conti. "That team (Kamehameha-Hawaii) was a very, very good defensive team and very smart in the things that they did, and Punahou is a very physical team that's very competitive and very tough."

"I think it was kind of a very emotional win for us to rise to the occasion like we did last night and for us to come in here and get two victories, I'm just proud of our guys."

Second-year starting setter Matt Ctvrtlik orchestrated a balanced attack with 29 assists, with senior Joey Martino (15 kills) and junior Ryan Moss (13 kills) each notching double-digit kill totals. The sophomore distributor also added 3 kills, 2 blocks and an ace for good measure, running point on an offense that looked extremely well-oiled for much of the match.

"We went through some growing pains last year, because we played a very competitive schedule, and I think its put us in a position to be pretty poised and comfortable, and a lot more confident this year," remarked Conti.

While Corona Del Mar was spreading the wealth offensively, Kamehameha-Hawaii found itself leaning, as they often do, on senior outside hitter Evan Enriques, who put down a game-high 16 kills, but attempted no less than 40 swings in the process.

"We're trying to minimize his (Evan's) swings and try to have a little more of a balanced attack," said Kamehameha-Hawaii head coach Guy Enriques. "He still gets the meat of our sets because he's the go-to guy, but when we go away (from him) we want the other guys to get some balls and put them away too."

"The kid is a stud," added Conti of Evan Enriques. "His volleyball IQ is very high and he also made some incredible defensive plays."

Despite the lack of offensive diversity, the lack of quit in the Warriors made the Sea Kings earn the sweep and then some. Kamehameha-Hawaii clawed back to within a single point at 24-23 in both sets two and three before ultimately bowing out.

"The young boys are getting a lot of experience with this (tournament)," remarked Kamehameha-Hawaii senior Evan Enriques. "It will definitely help them in the years to come because I'm pretty sure this is the first time they are getting this level of competition so its good for them."

Corona Del Mar never trailed in the first set and progressed in workmanlike-fashion to a 25-17 win. Ctvrtlik kept the Kamehemeha-Hawaii block honest by mixing up his set placement, as three Sea Kings' attackers notched 5 or more kills in the first, led by the Moss' seven. Ctvrtlik had 14 assists in the opening game alone.

Kamehameha-Hawaii took the lead for the first time in the contest at 3-2 in set number two, and rode a 6-0 scoring spurt to increase that margin to four. The Sea Kings slowly but surely chipped away at the Warriors' lead and took over for good on a Martino slam at 10-9.

The lead ballooned to 14-10 for Corona Del Mar, as Martino spikes found the floor twice more, and a Augie Miller return to sender on an overpass forced Kamehameha-Hawaii to burn a timeout to stop the momentum.

Back-to-back blocks by the Warriors' Emmett Enriques and Hanale Lee Loy pulled the home team to within a deuce, prompting a Sea Kings timeout.

Kamehameha-Hawaii got to within a 23-22 on a huge kill by Evan Enriques off of a set by brother Addison, but the Warriors got no closer, as Martino slammed down his sixth kill of the set to put Corona Del Mar up 2 sets to none.

Set three saw Kamehameha-Hawaii ahead 8-5 at the outset, powered by solo blocks courtesy of Emmett Enriques and Alapaki Iaea. That margin, as it did in set two, methodically vanished as Corona Del Mar tied the game on a Martino kill, then extended out of the Warriors timeout to a 15-11 margin on a swing by Moss.

The Warriors seized back some momentum at the service line thanks to a pair of aces by junior Kekaulike Alameda that trimmed the lead to a single point. A swing by Evan Enriques that found the floor capped off a 5-0 scoring run by Kamehameha-Hawaii good for a 16-15 lead and a timeout by Corona Del Mar.

Then, with the Sea Kings' sweep looking nearly academic, the Warriors' mounted a mini-comeback, sparked by an Iaea kill and then followed by a spike into the net by Corona Del Mar and an Evan Enriques kill that brought the Warriors' within a point of tying things up in the third.

The rally would be cut short on the very next point, as a Ctvrtlik to Martino connection spelled doom for the Warriors, ending the set and the match.

Brothers Addison and Avery, both freshman, shared time at the setter position for Kamehameha-Hawaii, with Avery collectiing 13 assists and Addison adding 8 more.

"I'm really pleased with the kids, we got two freshman setters that have never set before and they running a pretty darn good offense where we were having middle attacks," said Guy Enriques. "They are a little inconsistent right now, but playing good defense and getting the balls to the guys we need to get the balls to."

Iaea, a junior, had 4 kills to go along with two assists and a block, while fellow juniors Emmett Enriques and Hanale Lee Loy each added 2 kills and 2 blocks. Sophomores Isaiah Leaha and Pukana Vincent added a combined 3 kills and 3 blocks in the losing effort.

"They are a very young team (Kamehameha-Hawaii), I believe he (Evan Enriques) is the only senior in that lineup right now, so that's a team that's going to frustrate teams by the way they play defense, the way that the compete," said Conti.
