'EWA BEACH - If anything, Campbell showed each player has the other's back.

Nashlynn Anguay's run-scoring triple ignited a three-run bottom of the sixth inning and the No. 10 Sabers down No. 5 Mililani, 5-2, Thursday at Campbell's senior day. The big hit came after the Trojans scored two runs on a throwing error in the top of the sixth to tie the crucial O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West softball game.

It was a big win for the Sabers (6-3), who pulled into a tie for second with idle Wai'anae (6-3); both trail the Red West-leading Trojans (7-3) by a half game in the standings.

"It's not just me and the catcher," Campbell winning pitcher Elisa Favela said. "I have my teammates that I feel confident playing with. They back me up."

Favela kept the Trojans in check, allowing two unearned runs on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. She retired the lead-off hitter in every inning, except the sixth, when the Trojans scored their only runs.

"I hit my spots and they weren't hitting my outsides (pitches) as much, so my insides and outsides were working," the sophomore right-hander said.

"She hit the spots the way I wanted it," Campbell coach Shag Hermosura said of Favela. "Her ball was moving a lot, a little different speed, we changed from different pitches. She made good adjustments. She's been working hard."

With the game knotted at 2, the Sabers opened the bottom of the sixth on Kyra Hoohuli's single to left. After being lifted for courtesy runner Justice Corpuz, the left-handed hitting Anguay drilled a liner to left-center to score Corpuz.

"It was an outside pitch," Anguay said of her opposite-field hit. "I waited on it like the coaches said and waited until it got (closer) because the past few at-bats, I was hitting it too early, so this time I waited."

Anguay said she ran through a stop sign and stopped about 10 feet shy of the plate when she realized the throw was going to be close. But shortstop Jade Yadao-Valdez's relay to the plate was up the first-base line and Anguay easily scored to put the Sabers up 4-2.

"At the last minute, I saw Coach Shag (Hermosura) and I saw his hand up, telling me to stop," Anguay explained. "By the time I saw him, I was more than halfway down the path, so I kind of waited to see where the ball would go; when I saw it bobbled and dropped, I just went."

Abbygale Doldolea was hit by a pitch and took second when Ashlyn Yagin reached on a bunt single. After a passed ball advanced the runners to second and third, Cydney Curran's ground single to center scored Doldolea, but  Yagin was gunned down at the plate on a strong throw from center fielder Tori-Anne Baysa for the first out of the inning.

Curran stole second, but was stranded there when the next two batters were retired.

The Trojans did not leave without a fight in the top of the seventh. With one out, Kylyn Sasaki reached on a throwing error by shortstop Sissy Pantastico, who made up for it by hustling near the foul line to catch Keri Togami's pop up between the third baseman and left fielder for the second out. Yadao smoked a single up the middle to send Sasaki to second, but Favella retired Yoshiura on a harmless grounder to second baseman Curran to end the game.

The game got off to a funky start. Mililani starting pitcher Aubree Kim, who allowed an unearned run on five hits with 10 strikeouts in a complete-game during her first outing against Campbell and winning, 2-1, on March 15, lasted just eight pitches and two batters Thursday. Trojans' coach Rose Antonio wanted to see what she could squeeze out of her ailing ace, but she threw eight consecutive balls to walk Curran and Pantastico to start the bottom of the first.

"She's been sick all week," Antonio said. "She had a fever all week. We took a chance with her."

When it became evident that Kim was not going to be her usual self, the hard-throwing pitcher
was replaced by the finesse-tossing Tristan Cozo, who greeted  Caragh Morris by hitting her to load the bases. Favela reached when she hit a grounder to third baseman Yoshiura, who fired home to force out the runner, but Cozo could not sneak a pitch by the dangerous-hitting Kawehi Kahana, whose ground single to left scored two runs and sent courtesy runner Shaila Oliveira to second. Kyra Hoohuli singled to short to load the bases, but Anguay's grounder to second forced another runner out at home before Doldolea grounded out to second to end the inning.

Cozo kept the Sabers in check the next five innings and long enough for her teammates to tie the game in the top of the sixth.

"She worked down (in the strike zone) more," Hermosura said of Cozo. "We made adjustments to where we could put the barrel on the ball. That second pitcher, she throws a lot of drops, so we pushed everybody up so at least we could make contact."

Yoshiura led off with a single, but returned to first when center fielder Anguay robbed Karly Macadangdang of an extra-base hit with a running catch in deep left-center. Kristen Ishii reached on a bunt single between home and first. First baseman Morris tried to catch Yoshiura rounding the bag, but the throw sailed and rolled all the way to the center-field fence, scoring both runs to tie the game at 2. Favela was not bothered by the miscue and retired the next two batters on infield pop outs.

But it is a team game and the Sabers picked up Morris with the three-run rally. Last Saturday, Morris picked up her team with a two-home run game.
