Hawaiian Electric Game of the Week
No. 1 Maryknoll hosts No. 2 Iolani in ILH final Friday

It's No. 1 versus No. 2 for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu single-elimination tournament title Friday night.

For the third time this season, Iolani and Maryknoll will face off in league play. While both the Raiders (8-3), ranked second in the ScoringLive/OC16 Boys Baskebtall Power Rankings, and the top-ranked Spartans (10-1) have secured berths in next week's state tournament, the ILH championship — and a first-round bye in states — will be at stake when the teams take the court at Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium.

Maryknoll captured the regular-season title nearly two weeks ago and can seize the overall league title with a win Friday. Iolani must win Friday to force a winner-take-all one-game playoff Saturday for a chance at the ILH championship. That game would also be played at 6 p.m. at Ching Gymnasium.

The Raiders have won three straight and six of their last eight games. They finished second in the regular-season standings and beat Punahou, 53-37, in a tournament semifinal Wednesday.

Ikaika Phillip led the way with 21 points — which tied his season-high — and fellow senior guard Zach Buscher added 14 points in Iolani's second win over the Buffanblu in a week. Iolani was a stellar 32 of 34 on free throws and out rebounded Punahou, 24 to 12, in Wednesday's game.

Phillip ranks fifth in the ILH D1 with 13.6 points per game, while Buscher contributes 10.5 points per game, good for ninth in the league. In his past two games, Phillip has scored 20 points.

Maryknoll defeated Kamehameha, 59-41, in their semifinal game Wednesday night. Josh Burnett, a senior wing, and Kaleb Gilmore, a junior guard, scored 19 points apiece to help the Spartans secure their spot in the tournament final. The Spartans made 20 of their 24 free throws in the game and held the rebounding edge, 29 to 17.

The duo of Burnett (20.1 points per game) and Gilmore (17.9 points per game), rank first and second, respectively, in the ILH scoring. The Spartans, who average 61 points per game as a team, have won six straight games.

Maryknoll has won both previous meetings against Iolani this season. The Spartans won at the Raiders' gym, 69-60, back on Jan. 11. Gilmore poured in 30 points and Burnett 21 to overcome a combined 26 points from Phillip and Buscher in that game.

Burnett drove the length of the court for the game-winning layup when the teams met at Ching Gymnasium on Jan. 29, which Maryknoll narrowly won, 39-37. Gilmore led the Spartans with 13 points in that game and Burnett added 11. Buscher's 16 points paced the Raiders.

Tip off Friday is set for 6 p.m. A live audio stream of the game will be available on scoringlive.com.
