Mid-Pacific Athletics and Performance Basketball Clinics are collaborating to host the Hawaii Elite Basketball Camp from July 18-21 in Mills Gymnasium. The camp will host some of the Island's best high school players, aged 13 and above, and will feature high level instruction from NBA, college and varsity-level coaches. The lead clinician for the camp will be the Los Angeles Clippers' director of player development Dave Severns. Before working for the Clippers, Severns served on the coaching staff for the Chicago Bulls. Expert instruction will also be provided by Herb Livsey. Currently a scout for the Denver Nuggets, Livsey has been of a staff member of the Portland Trailblazers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Toronto Raptors and San Antonio Spurs. Coach Livsey also served as director of player personnel for the Continental Basketball Association, a feeder system for the NBA. He is well known for running the Snow Valley Basketball School, for 39 years, in California. The camp will consist of daily instruction to enhance a number of basketball skills, including but not limited to ball handling, shooting, passing, defense and rebounding.
During the later portions of the camp, games between similarly skilled players in a 5-on-5 setting will take place. The games will have coaches, referees and the score will be kept and recorded. The camp will run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a break for lunch. MPI senior Ryan Swanson (second from the left on the camp flyer) participated in the camp last year, and will appear in this year's camp ads and publications across the state.
"The camp was a lot of fun," said Ryan Swanson. "It was cool to play against good players from across the Island."Participants receive on court instruction, a jersey and and individual player profile.
