Pearl City girls retain OIA wrestling championship

WAHIAWA - Anchored by five individual champions, the Pearl City girls wrestling team won its second straight Oahu Interscholastic Association team title Saturday at Leilehua's Paul T. Kobayashi Gymnasium.

The Chargers, who have won all three of their league crowns since 2009, earned points in 10 of the 14 weight classes. Pearl City picked up 177 points to beat out runner-up Waianae, who finished well behind with 128. Radford was third with 88 points, Kapolei fourth with 84 1/2 and Kahuku fifth with 83.

"It feels good seeing them all happy and smiling, you know, that's the best part, (beecause) they have that sense of accomplishment and that's great," Chargers coach Mike Lee said.

A pair of sisters were among the quintet of individual titlists that paved the way for Pearl City. Senior Kaimiloa Evans won the 132-pound bracket while her freshman sister Asia Lien Evans captured first at 123 pounds. Junior Breanne Takaesu won at 107 pounds, senior Sarah Grace Alegria did the same at 111 and senior Janelle Fuamatu took first at 157.

"All these girls, all year, they've been consistent and all of them are battling through little injuries here and there and they came through big for us," Lee said. "Sarah, Kaimi and Janelle - they're three seniors - so the expectations for them were pretty high. I'm happy for them."

The Chargers also got a runner-up finish from Xandria Ford (115 pounds) and third-place finishes by Joen Tominaga (119) and Netanya Kang (137). Also, Rachel Tolentino (103 pounds) placed fifth and Kristin Roche (99) sixth, in their respective weight classes.

Takaesu was the first Pearl City wrestler crowned Saturday with her pin of Radford's Riana Traxler, four minutes and 18 seconds into their 107-pound final.

"It was the (third) period, I think, and I just wanted to pin her super fast already because I was tired," Takaesu said.

Alegria soon followed suit with an easy 13-2 victory over Leilehua's Nakia James in the 111-pound title match before Asia Lien Evans pinned Mililani's Angela Lee to capture the 123-pound division.

"I was really nervous," Evans said. "I felt like I was going to pass out, because (Lee) is very intimidating and it just took me by shock that I was actually in the championship round."

Evans trailed 5-2 late in the first period, but stormed ahead 6-5 with an early, second-period takedown, and ultimately pinned Lee 3:57 into the bout.

As nervous as Asia Lien Evans was, her sister admits she was probably worse.

"I was a nervous wreck," Kaimiloa Evans said. "I watched her get on the mat and I was thinking 'Oh my gosh, I can't watch,' but I had to! So I ran downstairs because I had to watch her, I just couldn't stay up in the staging area."

Which, by the way, didn't affect big sister one bit in preparing for her match. Kaimiloa Evans pinned Mililani's Phairin Hicks at the 1:27 mark in the 132-pound final.

"It's just awesome. I want to keep this tradition going," she said.

Janelle Fuamatu was the final Charger crown Saturday with her 8-2 win over Campbell's Kuuleilani Lankford in the 157-pound title match.

The night's most exciting championship bout may have been the very first, between Waianae's Malie Gonsalves and Roosevelt's Maia Phanthadara in the 99-pound final.

Phanthadara held a 2-0 lead after the first period and extended it to 6-3 after the second. After a near-fall with about a minute left in the third period to take a seemingly commanding 8-3 lead, Gonsalves staged a furious rally, outscoring her opponent, 9-2, the rest of the way.

Gonsalves cut it to 8-5 on a reversal and tied it at 8 following a near-fall with just 45 seconds remaning. Phanthadara briefly reclaimed the lead following an escape, but Gonsalves returned the favor with a takedown with 35 seconds left. Gonsalves went up 12-9 after a near-fall before Phanthadara closed out the scoring with a late escape.

"I didn't know the score or anything, I was just focused on wrestling," said Gonsalves. "I kind of knew she was kind of getting tired, so I just had to set my mind on just wrestling harder than I did in the last two periods and try to catch up, because I had to win and I kind of had to redeem myself from losing to her before."

Kapolei's Kaelynn Canyete, last year's 100-pound state champion, won the 103-pound bracket with her third-round pin of Farrington's Alanda Nguyen.

After a scoreless first period, Canyete reeled off seven straight points on a reversal and two near-falls to take a commanding lead, which she stretched to 9-0 with a third-period takedown before pinning Nguyen with just 19 seconds left on the clock.

"When I woke up this morning, I had a goal, and my goal was to pin every girl that I challenged," said Canyete, who also won by pin in her quarterfinal and semifinal matches.

A total of 103 wrestlers competed in 168 matches over the two-day tournament.

The Chevron/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Wrestling State Championships will be held Friday and Saturday at Neal Blaisdell Center Arena.
