Hurricanes turn it up in the second half to beat Red Raiders

Kapolei cashed in on a pair of second-half opportunities for a 3-1 win over Kahuku in the opening round of the OIA Division I playoffs Monday night at the Alvin Nagasako Sports Complex.

Larry McCarley beat the keeper to the ball on a breakaway in the 47th minute for the go-ahead score and Leon Riel scored off a Aleki Kiesel corner kick in the 54th minute for the final goal of the match.

The Hurricanes (8-2-1) advances to play Kalani, the East's No. 2 seed, Tuesday night in the first quarterfinal at Mililani's John Kauinana Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.

Jesse Anderson got Kapolei on the board early in the fifth minute off a cross from leading scorer Logan Aurio coming down the left side of the field.

The Red Raiders, who saw their season end with a 4-4-3 record, tied things up in the 20th minute on a goal from Kea Lerner.
