No. 3 Punahou dominates No. 9 Iolani, 49-24

After suffering its first loss of the season to Saint Louis last week, Punahou redeemed itself with a 49-24 win over Iolani, 49-24 at Eddie Hamada Field Saturday afternoon.

Quarterback Nick Kapule passed for 284 yards and four touchdowns to help the third-ranked Buffanblu improve to 3-1 and 2-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I standings. Iolani, ranked ninth in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Division I Power Rankings, dropped to 3-3 overall and 0-3 in league play.

In the first quarter Punahou wide receiver Andrei Iosivas caught a 43-yard touchdown pass from Kapule for the first score of the game. The Buffanblu extended their lead to 14-0 after Kapule tossed a 17-yard TD pass to Eamon Brady and completed the 2-point conversion to Iosivas.

Iolani's Evan Minami kicked a 27-yard field goal to make the score 14-3 heading into the second period.

The Buffanblu added their third score of the game in the second quarter with wide receiver Judd Cockett's 15-yard TD catch. The Raiders quickly bounced back when receiver Brent Nagami scored on a 73-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tai-John Mizutani.

Punahou running back Enoch Nawahine had a 1-yard touchdown late in the second quarter to make it a 28-10 game at the break.

Cockett finished with five receptions for 106 yards and added another score in the third period on a 60-yard reception from Kapule. Wide receiver Tamatoa Falatea also scored on 34-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Stephen Barber to help the Buffanblu take a 42-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Iolani running back KJ Pascua ran in a 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to stop the string of Punahou scores. The Raiders still had some fight left when defensive back Makana LaBoy returned an interception 75 yards for a pick-6.

Nawahine ended the game with a 19-yard run and Jeff Chan booted the PAT for the final points of the game, 49-24.

Punahou gained a total of 643 yards on offense, with 399 yards coming through the air. Kapule's touchdown passes totaled to 284 yards and one interception.

Next week the Buffanblu return to Aloha Stadium to face off with Kamehameha, while the Raiders host Saint Louis. Both game will be played on Sept. 23.
