Defending champ Kamehameha draws top seed in D1 state tourney


Reigning Division I state champion Kamehameha drew the top seed in the New City Nissan/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Girls Volleyball State Tournament, which gets underway this week at two regional sites.

The Warriors (15-0) ran the table in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. They will play at Moanalua on Saturday against the winner of Friday's Waiakea-Mililani first-round match.

Moanalua (14-0), which went unbeaten through the Oahu Interscholastic Association, drew the second seed and will play at 5 p.m. Saturday in their home gym against the Kamehameha-Maui—Kahuku winner.

Kamehameha-Hawaii (15-0) won the Big Island Interscholastic Federation and is the third seed. The Warriors will play the Punahou-Nanakuli winner at 4 p.m. Saturday at Kamehameha-Maui.

King Kekaulike (12-1) finished atop the Maui Interscholastic League and is the fourth seed. Na Alii will make the short trek to the KS-Maui campus for the 6 p.m. match Saturday against the Kapolei-Castle winner.

The 12-team tournament gets underway Friday with doubleheaders at Moanalua and Kamehameha-Maui.

Quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinals on Nov. 7, which will be held at McKinley's Student Council Gymnasium. The third-place and championship matches will be held on Nov. 8 at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center.
