Third-ranked Kapaa blanks Waimea

Kapaa, ranked No. 3 in the ScoringLive/OC16 Division II Power Rankings, picked up its first win of the season with a 36-0 drubbing of ninth-ranked Waimea at Hanapepe Ballpark Friday night.

Quarterback Rudy Agoot accounted for three total scores in the Warriors win. Agoot tossed touchdown passes to Junard Mata and Brooks Bethel, and also ran one in for the first points of the game.

“Rudy did exactly what we needed him to do: control the game and manage the offense for us. He did a heck of a job,” said Kapaa coach Phillip Rapozo. “His composure was really good and you can see him (really) starting to mature.”

Offensively Kapaa utilized a no-huddle approach that allowed itself to run 57 offensive plays. Behind an offensive line unit anchored by center Maka Ah Loo, the Warriors were able to rush for 219 yards in the contest.

“Our offensive line to me was just dominating the line of scrimmage. That’s why we just said we (were going (to) run until they can stop it. That’s why we went that route,” explained Rapozo.

Scoring the other two touchdowns for the Warriors was running back Shain Davis. Both of Davis’ scoring plays were in the fourth quarters. Davis was lined up as a wildcat quarterback on these drives.

The Warriors defense was stout all night long, recording takeaways to put their offense in good field position. After Agoot’s scoring run, the Menehunes had a real nice drive into Kapaa territory that got thwarted with a fumble inside the Warriors’ 10-yard line.

“We fumbled on the very first play of the game. We must have lost the ball about five times,” Waimea coach Jason Caldeira lamented after the game.

Kapaa will have a week off before taking on reigning Kauai Interscholastic Federation champion Kauai on Sept. 12 at Vidinha Stadium.
