Kapolei ended the regular season back on the winning track, building a 20-0 halftime lead en route to a 41-7 victory over Waianae on Senior Night.
After being blanked one week ago in a 56 point loss to Mililani, the Hurricanes got back on track offensively, as Liatama Amisone threw for 271 yards and two TDs and rushed for 122 yards and two more scores to lead the way.
Kaina Kamohalii caught six passes for 163 yards, which included a 58 yard pitch and catch that got the scoring started for the home team with just 46 seconds left in the opening quarter.
Amisone scored on a keeper with 5:31 left in the second to make it 13-0 and then connected with Zayne Pasion on a 20 yard pass play to extend the lead to 20-0 with just 48 seconds left until halftime.
Kapolei's defense kept the pressure on for much of the night, getting to quarterback Shanceten Lagunero early and often. To his credit, Lagunero performed admirably in his first start of the year, completing 8 of 16 passes for 115 yards, but was sacked four times and intercepted once.
Speaking of defense, Waianae picked off two passes thrown by Amisone, making it five interceptions in two games for the Hurricanes' signal caller. Prior to this two game stretch, his only interception of the year came against Calabasas on the mainland back on Sept 1.
The second half saw the home team turn to the ground game, which included an eight yard rumble by Vaimetua Kamakele for a third quarter score followed by a 62 yard TD run by Amisone that would be his last of the evening.
On the ensuing kickoff, Waianae's Slater Kaleiohi appeared to mishandle the football as it tumbled towards the goal line, eventually gaining possession before using a stutter step move to break through the first level and beyond, eventually finding himself in the opposite end zone for a 98 yard kickoff return that made it 34-7.
Kapolei capped off the scoring for the night with a pass completion from Kekoa Koong to Laakea Tapaoan with just seconds left in the contest.
