Kamehameha, Kailua in Surfrider Classic championship

It will be Kamehameha and Kailua in the Surfrider Holiday Classic championship game Saturday night.

Kamehameha rolled to a 71-35 semifinal victory over Waipahu in the fifth annual tournament at Harry Murai Gymnasium Friday night. With a big size advantage, the Warriors went on a mid-first quarter run and took control of the game. Capitalizing on turnovers and some cold shooting by the Marauders, Kamehameha was up 40-17 at half.

"I thought we kind of figured it out, were unselfish with the ball, and we had a couple of spurts that gave us separation. Just trying to get better," said Kamehameha coach Greg Tacon.

In the title game Saturday night, Kamehameha will take on Kailua, who surprised Iolani 47-45 in the last game of the evening.

Kailua got off to a fast start, jumping all over the Iolani with a first quarter lead of 20-6. The Raiders gradually got back in the game after several unproductive possessions by the Surfriders and trailed only by 4 points at the halfway mark. The second half was tight all the way to the end as the Raiders led by center Hugh Hogland fought back to get even down the stretch. After key free throw misses by both sides, Iolani was down by two with six seconds left but could not convert as the celebration began for the home team and their fans. Iolani will play Waipahu in the third place game on Saturday.
