Three-way tie at top after first day of boys state golf


Moanalua's Shawn Lu and Punahou's Matthew Shen and Kyle Suppa finished as co-leaders after the first day of the David Ishii Foundation Boys Golf Championships at Wailua Municipal Golf Course on Kauai.

Lu and Suppa each carded a 36 both going out and coming in, while Shen rallied from a 38 going out with a 34 on the back nine to finish at even-par 72 after 18 holes of play.

Moanalua's Ray Kim sits in third a stroke back and Moanalua's Jun Ho Won and Saint Anthony's Chad Lee are tied for fourth with 74 strokes each.

Last year's runner-up, Moanalua's Kyosuke Hara currently sits in a tie for 18th place at 6-over par, and Punahou's Andrew Chin, who placed third in 2015 is in 7th place with a first round 75.

Punahou leads the team standings at 6-over par (294 strokes), followed by Moanalua at 16-over (304 strokes) and Iolani in third at 33-over (321 strokes).

The final round gets underway at 7 a.m. Thursday.
