WAIPIO - Campbell cashed in on walks, wild pitches and errors to beat Kapolei, 11-1, Friday night in a softball game called with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning because of the 10-run differential mercy rule at Central Oahu Regional Park.

The No. 2 Sabers improved to 5-1 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division, while the Hurricanes dropped to 2-4.

Leading 9-1 with runners at second and third with two out, Caragh Morris his grounder to third baseman Laugatasaia Pedebone, whose throw to first was dropped by the first baseman, allowing the runners to score and end the game.

Sophomore right-hander Danielle Cervantes picked up her third win and second complete game. Her command was inconsistent, as she gave up seven hits and three walks, but her defense made some nice plays to limit the damage in her six innings.

Kapolei was not as fortunate when it came to pitching. Starter Sadie Kapaku-You was scratched because she had the flu. Ace Pedebone was nursing a strained knee that affects her landing leg, though she was able to play third base. That left Kayla Higa to make her season debut as a pitcher She labored in the circle, allowing eight walks and eight wild pitches, along with 10 hits. Her defense did not help with three errors.

"She came into the season with a bad knee," Kapolei coach Tom Saffery said of Pedebone. "We pitched her a few times, but after about 20 minutes, she's gotta stop; the strain does not seem to be getting better. To be honest, I don't think she'll be ready for the season (to pitch). Sadie's been doing good things for us. We just can't get the job done defensively."

Meanwhile, Cervantes pitched herself into and out of trouble. She stranded eight runners and retired the side only once. Makana Meyers, who had two of her team's seven hits (along with Kamrymae Kanae), singled home Kapolei's only run in the second inning.

"I was not hitting my spots that I was supposed to," Cervantes said. "I was pitching over the plate and that's how they were making contact."

For Cervantes, it's a matter of being consistent. When she did strike out the five batters, she hit her spots.

"All the hits they had today was all (from) missing her spots," Campbell coach Michael Hermosura said. "Her rise wasn't working; she didn't throw her rise the way she can. Her changeup didn't work, too. Her curveball was working all right; we were working on that all week. I just told her, 'Hit your spots, let the guys behind you make the plays. Let them catch the fly balls, make them (field) the ground balls. Just work and give us a decent chance'…She's in the learning stage, but she's thrown a lot better than she has tonight."

Higa, ironically, was sort of effectively wild. Not all of Campbell's hits were hit hard.

"She was erratic, but we were anxious to put the barrel on the ball," Hermosura said. "It's hard to hit pitchers like that; they're wild then all of a sudden they come with a (good) pitch and you look at them and go, 'Oh….'"

The Sabers took a 3-0 lead in the first with two of the runs crossing the plate on wild pitches. Kiani Telles had an RBI single for the other run.

The Hurricanes had three hard-hit singles in the top of the second. Raina McKean led off with a single and Dallas Pollard-Brownell's single off the top of the left-field mesh fence - missing a home run by inches - put runners at first and second. Cervantes struck out the next batter and catcher Kiana Ulufale made a diving catch on a pop bunt by Alecia Kuhipea for the second out. But Meyers lined a single to center to to make it 3-1 before Cervantes struck out Shaycelynn Hoohuli.

Campbell added a run in the second on Cydney Curran's safety squeeze that she beat out for an infield RBI single. The Sabers scored twice in the third on Yagin's run-scoring single and another wild pitch. They added three more in the fourth on Ulufale's sacrifice fly and Yagin's safety squeeze and again on another wild pitch to make it 9-1.

The game ended on the two out error that scored two runs to give the Sabers the 10-run differential.
