MILILANI - Despite bench pressing a personal best 25 repetitions of 225 pounds, Saint Louis School's Fred Ulu-Perry Jr. did not think it was good enough.

"I didn't feel too good," the ScoringLive All-Hawai'i offensive lineman said after completing his final event of the day at the 13th Under Armour PIAA Hawaii High School Combine at Mililani Highi's John Kauinana Stadium. "I mean, 25? There are probably still a lot of guys stronger than me."

Well, not Saturday. The senior-to-be was two better than Mililani's Derrick Fetui-Suapaia, who pumped his 23 with another group.

The bench press was one of six events some 280 high-school athletes statewide were tested in at the combine. Other events were the 40-yard dash, agility drill, L-shaped drill, broad jump and vertical jump. The players were broken into groups of roughly 45.

Ulu-Perry, though, elected to skip the running/agility events.

"I pulled my left hammy," he said. "It was a while ago, but I didn't want to risk getting another injury."

Ulu-Perry completed his third PIAA combine in as many years.

"It's pretty good," he said. "It's a good experience."

The 6-foot-2, 310-pound Ulu-Perry will get more training when he attends UCLA and Southern California camps in June and Nike's The Opening in July in Oregon. The top 162 prospects nationwide are invited to this event. Ulu-Perry will join Farrington defensive lineman Breidon Fehoko and Punahou offensive lineman Semisi Uluave.

Although he plays left tackle for Saint Louis, colleges are projecting him to play center or guard, he said. Hawaii, Washington, Washington State, San Diego State, San Jose State, Kansas, Colorado, Nevada, Texas Tech and Oregon State have made him offers.

The combine gives exposure to players of all calibers. It had a direct benefit to two Maui High players, outside linebacker Alexander Vainikolo, and tight end/defensive end Jonathan Pono Lolohea. Each had offers from Division II Virginia Union, Vainikolo said.

"Today, I got my first offer from Virginia Union," said Vainikolo.

The combine is especially beneficial to Neighbor Island athletes, who do not get as much exposure.

"This brings the best together," said Vainikolo, who bench pressed 225 pounds 16 times. "Because I'm from Maui, so we get to see the top competition, so we know what to work on."

He was among 11 Maui High players who made the trip with their coach, Hawaii Baptist alumnus David Bui, a former Pac-Five player.

The combine also benefits underclassmen, who can measure their progress each year they participate in one. Mililani junior-to-be quarterback McKenzie Milton said he ran his best 40-yard dash time at 4.68 (electronic).

"Last year, I didn't do so well," Milton said. "It's just good to come out here and compete."

As a sophomore, Milton helped guide the Trojans to the OIA Red title and the school's first appearance in a state title game.

The training continues next weekend at Maximum Exposure, which will feature college coaches from around the country conducting clinics over a three-day period. It also will be held at Mililani.
